Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible Series
Sunday, March 13 at 10:30 AM - Emory University Cannon Chapel Room 105D
Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00 PM - Oxford College Humanities Hall Room 201
Many Catholics want to read the Bible because they know it is God’s Word, but they give up because it seems so complicated. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you get the “big picture” by showing how fourteen narrative books of the Bible tell the complete story from Adam and Eve to Christ and the Church. Presenter Jeff Cavins shows you how to read the Bible so that you can actually understand it. Aided by the unique color-coded Bible Timeline® Chart, which arranges the key people, places, and events of Scripture in chronological order, Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible will help you discover the story of salvation history and understand how you fit into God’s plan. This eight-session study program includes video presentations that explore all twelve time periods of The Bible Timeline Chart.

You may not think you’re in a position to make a difference through charitable giving, however, we believe that learning to support the mission of the Church is an integral part of being formed as a disciple. Charitable giving is an act of love, rooted in Christ. Please consider making or inviting your family to make a small sacrificial gift in support of our daily ministry expenses - the Masses, programs and events, salaries for staff, and more rely heavily on your support! Contact Your Senators: Vote No for Abortion on Demand
Last fall, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act. This coming Monday, February 28, the Senate will vote on it. Your senators need to hear from you! Among other extreme actions, this most radical abortion bill ever seen would:
  • Impose abortion on demand nationwide throughout every stage of pregnancy
  • Ban pro-life laws nationally AND in every state and local government
  • Force Americans to financially support abortions in the U.S. & abroad
  • Likely force health care providers to participate in abortions against their beliefs
  • Likely force employers and insurers to cover or pay for abortion
Please contact your Senators today to let them know this horrible bill must never become law. Join Archbishop Lori, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Cardinal Dolan, chairman of the Committee for Religious Liberty in urging the Senate to oppose H.R. 3755. Pre-written messages are ready for you to edit or send. It just takes a moment!

COVID-19 Update: Sunday Mass Time and Location Change

Sunday Mass Time and Location Change

Merry Christmas! We pray you are in good health and have been able to celebrate this Christmas season with family and friends.

As you may have heard, Emory has reentered orange operating status effective December 28 as a precaution due to the COVID omicron variant.

While campus will reopen on January 4, most classes will begin online, and students are encouraged to delay their return to campus until January 27. All nonessential university events and gatherings are being moved online or postponed, and any essential indoor or outdoor gatherings are being limited to 25 attendees.

In light of these policy changes, Cannon Chapel has become unavailable for the celebration of Mass until Monday, January 31 at the earliest.

For the time being, the University Catholic Center will celebrate the weekly Sunday Mass at 11 AM on the Catholic Center lawn (weather permitting).

We know this news is disheartening, but we also remember the hope of Advent and the joy of Christ's birth as we look forward to returning to Cannon Chapel for Mass in February.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or need additional help.

Yours in Christ,

Merry Christmas!

Glory to God in the Highest! Alleluia!

May the joy of Christ’s birth fill you with hope and peace throughout this Christmas season and into the new year. Be assured of our prayers for you and your family, and thank you so much for all of your support in 2021.

If you haven't had the opportunity, w
e humbly ask you to prayerfully consider joining us in our mission by considering a year-end gift to the University Catholic Center. You can do this through a recurring monthly gift, a one-time gift, and above all, your prayers. Your help will allow the Catholic Center to continue providing campus ministry to over 2,000 Catholic students!

We look forward to seeing you all in 2022!

From our families to yours, Merry Christmas!

Support student faith formation and community life through a year-end gift! Your support changes lives.

You shop, Amazon Smile donates to the University Catholic Center. It's all the same to you and it means the world to us.

Not In Our Name
The Road to Abolishing the Death Penalty in Georgia

Thursday, December 16 @ 7:00 PM - Sign up here
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the death penalty is “inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person” (2267). If we are to be a Church that consistently respects and promotes the life and dignity of all human beings, we must reject the death penalty and violence in all its forms. As we look toward the start of the Georgia General Assembly’s 2022 Session in January, the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Georgia Catholics Against the Death Penalty invite you to join us as we discuss the many roads to abolition and how you can join the movement to end the death penalty in our state.

Introducing the Synod on Synodality
A Letter from The Most Rev. Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv.
We have been invited to participate in an unprecedented moment in our Church’s history beginning this fall. On Sunday, Oct. 10, Pope Francis opened a two-year process called the Synod on Synodality (For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission) that will uniquely engage not only Catholics but God’s people all over the world. I want to personally encourage you, your family, and all those who are dear to you to join with me and our brothers and sisters in north and central Georgia on this extraordinary journey of faith. Read more

About the Synod on Synodality
A key question to help focus this process is: "A synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” How is this “journeying together” happening today in your local Church? What steps does the Spirit invite us to take to grow in “journeying together”? In the coming months, we will be invited to participate in a listening session, submit answers to a survey, or take time to listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit. In the meantime, please consider reading the preparatory documents for the Synod and other supporting materials.

Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus
Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with the prayer Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, the first word of the Latin original meaning, “We stand before You, Holy Spirit,” which has been historically used at Councils, Synods and other Church gatherings for hundreds of years, is attributed to Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560 - 4 April 636). We will be praying this prayer at the end of our Sunday Masses during the Synodal process and we invite you to pray it on your own!

About Black Catholic History Month
On July 24, 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic History Month to celebrate the long history and proud heritage of Black Catholics. Two commemorative dates fall within this month, Saint Augustine’s Birthday (November 13) and Saint Martin de Porres’ Feast Day (November 3). More importantly, November not only marks a time when we pray for all saints and souls in loving remembrance but also a time to recall the saints and souls of Africa and the African Diaspora. Read more

On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent
Julia Greeley (1833 and 1848-1918)
Servant of God Julia Greeley was born into slavery in Hannibal, Missouri sometime between 1833 and 1848. Freed by Missouri's Emancipation Act in 1865, Julia subsequently earned her keep by serving white families in Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico—though mostly in the Denver area. Julia entered the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver in 1880 and was an outstanding supporter of all the parish. The Jesuits who ran the parish considered her the most enthusiastic promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus they had ever seen. Every month she visited on foot every fire station in Denver and delivered literature of the Sacred Heart League to the firemen, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. A daily communicant, Julia had a rich devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin and continued her prayers while working. She joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1901 and was active in it till her death in 1918. As part of the Cause for Canonization, Julia's mortal remains were transferred to Denver's Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on June 7, 2017.

Introducing the Synod on Synodality
A Letter from The Most Rev. Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv.
We have been invited to participate in an unprecedented moment in our Church’s history beginning this fall. On Sunday, Oct. 10, Pope Francis opened a two-year process called the Synod on Synodality (For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission) that will uniquely engage not only Catholics but God’s people all over the world. I want to personally encourage you, your family, and all those who are dear to you to join with me and our brothers and sisters in north and central Georgia on this extraordinary journey of faith. Read more

About the Synod on Synodality
A key question to help focus this process is: A synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” How is this “journeying together” happening today in your local Church? What steps does the Spirit invite us to take to grow in “journeying together”? In the coming months, we will be invited to participate in a listening session, submitting answers to a survey, or taking time to listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit. In the meantime, please consider reading the preparatory documents for the Synod and other supporting materials.

Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus
Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with the prayer Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, the first word of the Latin original meaning, “We stand before You, Holy Spirit,” which has been historically used at Councils, Synods and other Church gatherings for hundreds of years, being attributed to Saint Isidore of Seville (c.

Venerable Augustus Tolton was the first U.S. Roman Catholic priest publicly known to be black when he was ordained in 1886. A former slave who was baptized and reared Catholic, Tolton formally studied in Rome. He was ordained in Rome on Easter Sunday at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Fr. Tolton led the development and construction of St. Monica’s Catholic Church as a black "National Parish Church”, which was completed in 1893. Tolton’s success at ministering to black Catholics quickly earned him national attention within the Catholic hierarchy. “Good Father Gus,” as many called him, was known for his eloquent sermons, his beautiful singing voice, and his talent for playing the accordion. He is the subject of the 1973 biography from Slave to Priest by Sister Caroline Hemesath. For more information on Fr. Augustus' cause, check out the website for his cause.

On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent
Servant of God Mother Mary Lange was born Elizabeth Lange, a native of the Caribbean, and believed to be Cuban born of Haitian descent. She was the foundress and first Superior General of the Oblate Sisters of Providence (1829-1832), the first religious congregation of African American women in the history of the Catholic Church. On July 2, 1829, Elizabeth and three other women professed their vows and became the Oblate Sisters of Providence with the goal of educating and evangelizing African Americans. They educated youth and provided a home for orphans. Freed slaves were educated and at times admitted into the congregation. They nursed the terminally ill during the cholera epidemic of 1832, sheltered the elderly, and served as domestics at St. Mary’s Seminary. Mother Mary Lange practiced faith to an extraordinary degree. It was her deep faith – in close union with Jesus – which enabled her to persevere against all odds. She lived through disappointment and opposition until God called her home in 1882 at the St. Frances Convent in Baltimore, Maryland. Read more

Faith In Action

He Made His Dwelling Among Us
The celebration of the Annunciation coincides with the anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life). This prophetic document on the dignity and inviolability of every human life was put forth by Pope John Paul II on the Solemnity of the Annunciation in 1995. The intimate connection of these two events highlights a profound reality about the identity and value of every human person. Read more.

We continue to pray for greater recognition of and protection for life at all stages. Monthly prayer guides can be found here.

Catholic Climate Petition
Catholic Climate Covenant invites you to join your voice with thousands of individuals signing this climate action petition across the U.S. Catholic community as a faith-filled appeal to President Biden and the U.S. Congress to work beyond partisanship and create climate solutions to care for present and future generations and our common home.

No Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Petition
The Hyde Amendment and similar laws have protected taxpayers from funding elective abortion for 45 years. Now, powerful members of Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. Billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortion. It is critically important for Catholics to send a strong message before Congress moves forward to impose taxpayer-funded abortion. Take action and sign the petition to Congress at NoTaxpayerAbortion.com

On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent
Venerable Pierre Toussaint (1776-1853)
Venerable Pierre Toussaint, a philanthropist and founder of many Catholic charitable works, was born a slave in Haiti and brought from Haiti to New York as an apprentice under a popular hairstylist in the city. He eventually became the most sought-after hairdresser of high society women. Upon the death of his master, he gained his freedom and quickly succeeded as one of the country’s first black entrepreneurs. He became quite wealthy, but instead of spending lavishly on himself, he supported the Church and the poor. He and his wife sheltered orphans, refugees, and others out on the streets in their home. He founded one of New York’s first orphanages and raised money for the city’s first cathedral. During yellow fever epidemics, Toussaint would risk his life to help others by nursing the sick and praying with the dying.“I have never felt I am a slave to any man or woman but I am a servant of Almighty God who made us all. When one of his children is in need, I am glad to be His slave.”

Faith In Action

A Prayer to St. Joseph, Defender of Life
This prayer and many more can be found here
